| The University of Newcastle Upon Tyne
was established as a School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834
and is now one the UK’s leading universities, positioned in
the top 20. We have a tradition of welcoming students from
all over the world and currently have more than 3,000 international
students from more than 100 different countries. |

| The University has developed a range of teaching
and research interests which span arts and humanities; biological,
biomedical, environmental and agricultural sciences; business
and management; education, communication and language sciences;
engineering and computing science; medicine and dentistry;
physical and mathematical sciences; and social science and
law. |
| The Sunday Times newspaper chose Newcastle as
its University of the Year 2000/01, stating: ‘Backed by superb
all-round strength, Newcastle is our choice because of its
outstanding teaching record.’ No subject taught at Newcastle
has been awarded less than 20 out of a maximum 24 points by
the Quality Assurance Agency. The Medical School has gained
143 out of a possible 144 points in its six subject areas. |
| The University of Newcastle Upon Tyne invests
over £10 million per year on its library and computing facilities,
making it one of the UK’s highest spending universities in
this respect. Robinson Library was the first university library
in the UK to gain a charter mark for excellence. Since 1995
this award has been renewed four times. It has over one million
volumes and 2,450 user places including 200 PCs. |
| University Computing Service (UCS) provides more
than 1,000 PC workstations in cluster rooms around the campus.
The advanced PC service is complemented by two Macintosh clusters
and a Unix service. Scientific facilities include the Wolfson
Research Centre for the Institute for Ageing and Health, new
laboratories for rheumatology, anti-cancer drug development,
archaeology, food and nutrition, and refurbished laboratories
in environmental engineering, geotextiles and plant biology. |
| In the first half of 2001, the Government awarded
£7.2 million for a nanotechnology centre at the University
and a further £16.3 million was awarded from the Scientific
Research Investment Fund. In January 2005 the Music School
was successful in a bid to gain a new status as Centre for
Excellence in Teaching and Learning, receiving over £4.5m in
government funding. The newly refurbished health and fitness
suite has some of the latest equipment designed to train the
cardiovascular system. The Claremont Sports Centre has a double
court sports hall and four squash courts. |
| The Students’ Union is the main on-campus social
venue for the University with a reputation for a variety of
popular events. There are comedy nights, quiz nights and dance
events. There is a well-resourced welfare facility for all
our students including a Disability Support Service, a Student
Advice Centre and a Student Counselling Service. |
| The Student Advice Centre provides a support and
immigration advice service to all students and their dependents
which is free, impartial and confidential. It is open throughout
the year, both in term time and during vacations. |
| There are four permanent advisers available to provide information
and advice on finance, immigration, academic matters, housing,
legal and consumer rights. The University of Newcastle Upon
Tyne has a chaplaincy on-campus which welcomes people of all
faiths. In addition, there is a mosque on-campus, a Hindu Temple
nearby and a synagogue within five kilometres |
