The Sunday Times newspaper chose Newcastle as its University of the Year 2000/01, stating: ‘Backed by superb all-round strength, Newcastle is our choice because of its outstanding teaching record.’ No subject taught at Newcastle has been awarded less than 20 out of a maximum 24 points by the Quality Assurance Agency. The Medical School has gained 143 out of a possible 144 points in its six subject areas.

Facilities
The University of Newcastle Upon Tyne invests over £10 million per year on its library and computing facilities, making it one of the UK’s highest spending universities in this respect. Robinson Library was the first university library in the UK to gain a charter mark for excellence. Since 1995 this award has been renewed four times. It has over one million volumes and 2,450 user places including 200 PCs.

University Computing Service (UCS) provides more than 1,000 PC workstations in cluster rooms around the campus. The advanced PC service is complemented by two Macintosh clusters and a Unix service. Scientific facilities include the Wolfson Research Centre for the Institute for Ageing and Health, new laboratories for rheumatology, anti-cancer drug development, archaeology, food and nutrition, and refurbished laboratories in environmental engineering, geotextiles and plant biology.

In the first half of 2001, the Government awarded £7.2 million for a nanotechnology centre at the University and a further £16.3 million was awarded from the Scientific Research Investment Fund. In January 2005 the Music School was successful in a bid to gain a new status as Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, receiving over £4.5m in government funding. The newly refurbished health and fitness suite has some of the latest equipment designed to train the cardiovascular system. The Claremont Sports Centre has a double court sports hall and four squash courts.

Student life
The Students’ Union is the main on-campus social venue for the University with a reputation for a variety of popular events. There are comedy nights, quiz nights and dance events. There is a well-resourced welfare facility for all our students including a Disability Support Service, a Student Advice Centre and a Student Counselling Service.

The Student Advice Centre provides a support and immigration advice service to all students and their dependents which is free, impartial and confidential. It is open throughout the year, both in term time and during vacations.

There are four permanent advisers available to provide information and advice on finance, immigration, academic matters, housing, legal and consumer rights.
